The editors and staff of the Annals of Tropical Research are deeply saddened to learn that Dr. Arnold V. Hallare, a very active member of the international editorial board of the ATR since 2012, has passed away suddenly on 31 April 2021 at the age of 53 due to heart failure.

Dr. Hallare was an internationally recognized environmental toxicologist. He was a professor of environmental toxicology, university scientist, and director of the National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences at the University of the Philippines Manila. He finished his BS and MS degrees in Biology from UP Diliman and a Diploma in Applied Science (Ecology and Resource Management) from Lincoln University, New Zealand. He obtained his Dr. rer nat (PhD) in Ecotoxicology (Magna Cum Laude) from the Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany as a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholar. He did his postdoctoral work at the RWTH Aachen University and the Helmholtz Institute for Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany.

Among the many awards that Dr. Hallare had received were the 2007 Outstanding Young Scientist of the Philippines award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the UP Manila Outstanding Researcher for the Centennial Year, UP-CAS Most Outstanding Faculty, the Roberto Benedicto Professorial Chair, and the UP Professorial Chair, and the world-renowned and highly competitive Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship.

Dr. Hallare was a Section Editor for the Journal of Sediments and Soils (a top international journal published by Springer Verlag), a member of the international editorial board of the Annals of Tropical Research, and a regular reviewer for the following international journals: Aquatic Toxicology, Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, Hydrobiologia, Ecotoxicology, and Environmental Safety, Fresenius Environmental Bulletin, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, and Environmental Science & Pollution Research Bulletin.

He was a proud member of the Humboldt Fellows Philippines and actively participated in international conferences of Humboldt fellows organized by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn. He was also the project leader at UP Manila of the ASTHRDP-NSC (Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program-National Science Consortium) graduate scholarship of the Department of Science and Technology.

Finally, Arnold was a great person and a great friend. May his soul rest in peace.
